NASHVILLE -- The old adage says good things come to those who wait.
The Tennessee Titans hope things work out that way as they wait to learn their opponent in the divisional round of the AFC playoffs this Saturday.
The Titans know they will face the Baltimore Ravens or the winner of Saturday's late game between the Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers.
The Titans have done some preliminary work in video study for all three teams and have the added familiarity of having played the Ravens in October and facing division rival Indianapolis twice a year.
The Titans haven't played the Chargers this season but played them twice in 2007, including a season-ending playoff loss at Qualcomm Stadium.
"It was real disappointing, because there were a couple of times that year that we could have beaten them," running back LenDale White recalled. "We had the game won, but there were some things where we let down a couple of times, and unfortunately they were celebrating while we were taking a four-hour plane ride home."
White believes the familiarity factor can come into play, no matter which wild-card-round survivor the top-seeded Titans draw this coming weekend.
"Everything is in our hands right now. It's up to us. It depends on what we want to do," White said. "Regardless of who we play, we're pretty familiar with all these guys. We've played against them. People might tweak things here and there, but we've watched the film, we've seen these guys and we're familiar with them."
This past week, the Titans practiced offense vs. defense training-camp style to try to stay sharp.
Cornerback Nick Harper, a veteran of many playoff games with the Colts and last year with Tennessee, said the Titans tried to use the time wisely to prepare for this week.
"Guys are definitely paying attention. Practices are going great, and guys have definitely stepped it up," Harper said. "It's showing by guys going in the weight room and doing what it takes to be ready. You have to get your body back right. You have to get your strength back up.
"It's a long season and you're going to be depleted. So now that you have the bye week, we're going to do some extra running and do what it takes to get our legs back under us."
The Titans wrapped up practice Friday, and when they return Monday and practice fully on Tuesday, the suspense of not knowing which team they will face will be over.
"The message is clear. We've earned the opportunity to have a couple days off, so use it wisely, rest, take care of yourself, enjoy the ballgames," coach Jeff Fisher said Friday. "There's 20 teams that have gone home; there's 12 left. When (the players) come back Monday, there will be eight left -- four in our conference -- and that's a great opportunity for us."
That part of Fisher's message came through clearly in the locker room before the players departed for the weekend.
"We have a first-round bye, but it all means nothing if we don't win in the playoffs," White said. "It's not about getting in the playoffs anymore. We're in these playoffs to win a Super Bowl. That's what it's about."
