Tennessee Titans Strategy and Personnel 2009-01-02

Tennessee Titans Strategy and Personnel 2009-01-02
The Titans welcomed back an old friend to help bolster special teams. Tennessee re-signed FB/TE Casey Cramer on Wednesday and placed LB Josh Stamer on injured reserve with a groin injury suffered in Sunday's loss at Indianapolis.

It is Cramer's third stint with the Titans, having been on their practice squad in 2004 before leaving for Carolina. He returned off waivers and played as a utility man with Tennessee in 2006-07, but was released in final cuts this year.

Cramer signed with the Miami Dolphins and spent most of the season there, but he was released with two weeks to play in the regular season. Earlier this week, he got a call from Titans coach Jeff Fisher.

"The Saturday before week 16 in Miami, I got released, so I waited around until Tuesday and went home for Christmas and spent some time with my family," Cramer said. It was the first time in six years I got to spend Christmas at home. I did a lot of shoveling (of snow), and I just kind of waited around."

Cramer will fill a variety of special teams roles and can serve as a backup long snapper in case starting center Kevin Mawae's elbow injury doesn't allow him to back up Ken Amato in that capacity.

"Casey clearly knows what we're doing offensively and will take just a couple days to get caught up and then in special teams he knows the philosophy, knows the techniques," Fisher said. "He's been very effective for us."

The Titans also got DT Kevin Vickerson back from a four-game suspension. Vickerson practiced on Wednesday and the Titans will have a one-week roster exemption to use during the bye before they have to clear a space for him to return to the 53-man active roster.

PLAYER NOTES

--C Kevin Mawae continues to miss time in practice with an elbow injury. The Titans are being very closed-mouth regarding his status for next week's game.

--DE Kyle Vanden Bosch continues to work in drills on the side. Vanden Bosch, who had groin surgery in mid-December, looks to be hitting his stride and has targeted next week as his time to return to the practice field.

--DT Albert Haynesworth ran on the side Thursday, testing his sprained MCL for the first time since injuring it late in the Titans' 13-12 loss at Houston on Dec. 14. Haynesworth is expected to play in the playoff game.

--DE Dave Ball has not practiced for two weeks because of a sore back. Ball has 4.5 sacks this season as a valuable backup and spot starter while Vanden Bosch was out.

--LB David Thornton got a day off from the full pad practice Thursday to rest on Thursday. Thornton was deactivated for the season finale with a sore hip.

--CB Nick Harper has worked in limited fashion the past two days. He went to the side for running when the Titans finished seven-on-seven drills and began team periods Thursday.

--QB Kerry Collins' numbers weren't gaudy, as he completed 242 of 415 passes for 2,676 yards. But the most important numbers he put up were the ones that more or less reversed last year's issues with Vince Young and the passing game. Last year, Young threw nine TDs and was intercepted 17 times. This season, Collins tossed only 12 touchdowns, but was intercepted just seven times.

--RB Chris Henry continues to be a non-factor for the Titans, even in a game where they were resting players. Henry got just one carry for three yards in mop-up time. While Chris Johnson was a healthy scratch to preserve him for the playoffs, Henry did not get his chance to carry the ball until both LenDale White and Quinton Ganther were finished.

--WR Brandon Jones wound up with the most catches among the Titans wide receivers with 41, but that was only third on the team behind TE Bo Scaife (58) and RB Chris Johnson (43).

INJURY IMPACT: DE Kyle Vanden Bosch, DT Albert Haynesworth and C Kevin Mawae still have not returned to the practice field because of their injuries. Vanden Bosch said he will practice next week and hopes to be recovered enough from groin surgery to play. Haynesworth, battling an MCL sprain, indicated that his recovery has been slow, but he expects to play on Jan. 10 in the divisional round of the playoffs. Mawae's injury status is uncertain, as neither he nor the club have revealed much about his status. He missed last year's playoff game. The only thing known about the injury is that his elbow is not dislocated. DE Dave Ball is still idled by a sore back, but should play next week, as should CB Nick Harper, who has been slowed by a groin injury.
