Tennessee Titans Strategy and Personnel 2008-12-04

Tennessee Titans Strategy and Personnel 2008-12-04
The Titans shored up the depth in the secondary two weeks ago by signing Tyrone Poole and elevating Tuff Harris from the practice squad after losing both Eric King and Reynaldo Hill to injuries. The Titans decided against bringing up seventh-round pick Cary Williams because of his inexperience.

This week, the Titans added more depth to the practice squad, signing cornerback Tanard Davis to fill Harris' slot on the eight-man unit.

PLAYER NOTES

--CB Cortland Finnegan did not practice Wednesday because of a mild hamstring problem. The injury is not expected to keep him out of the lineup Sunday.

--CB Nick Harper, who missed time after twisting his left ankle against Detroit before returning to finish, was out of practice on Wednesday, but should be able to play against the Browns.

--DB Vincent Fuller shifted outside and got reps at cornerback on Wednesday with the first unit. Fuller, a backup safety and the team's primary nickel back, is an emergency option on the outside if need be.

--LB Keith Bulluck, back practicing despite a rib cartilage tear, has played through the injury and is expected to make the 110th consecutive start of his career on Sunday.

--WR Justin Gage, bothered by a knee sprain during the middle part of the season, has been the closest thing the Titans have to a deep threat. He has 24 receptions, including a 56-yard touchdown among his four scores, and is averaging 18.9 yards per catch.

GAME PLAN: The Titans defense has to be licking its chops at the thought of journeyman Ken Dorsey being under center for the Browns. The Titans expect Cleveland could have to resort to a shorter passing attack to compensate for Dorsey's lack of arm strength, and hope to take away seam passes and things over the middle. With Dorsey's arm strength potentially in question, the Titans would love to make him go the long way with deep outs and sideline throws as much as possible. Either way, Tennessee will try to get pressure with its front four to harass a quarterback making his first start in three years into mistakes.

Offensively, the Titans' M.O. will be to try and keep a running game that put up 292 yards against hapless Detroit going strong. The fact that the Browns defense held Indianapolis without an offensive touchdown, though, certainly got the Titans' attention.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Titans CB Cortland Finnegan vs. Browns WR Braylon Edwards. The Titans keep their corners mostly on the same side with Finnegan right and Nick Harper left. Edwards has been plagued by drops, but with Kellen Winslow out of the mix, the Browns will have to rely on him Sunday.

Titans C Kevin Mawae vs. Browns NT Shaun Rogers. For the second time in three games, the Titans face a 3-4 defense, and the 6-4, 350-pound Rogers could present problems in the middle. The Titans did not fare all that well against the Jets' 3-4 anchored by Kris Jenkins. It will be incumbent upon Mawae and guards Jake Scott and Eugene Amano to create rushing lanes for Chris Johnson and LenDale White so as not to put quarterback Kerry Collins in undesirable third-down distances.

INJURY IMPACT: After 10 days off since their Thanksgiving win, the Titans are as healthy as any team could probably be readying for its 13th game of the season. Cortland Finnegan (hamstring) and Nick Harper (ankle) were given Wednesday off to continue to rest, but should be able to go on Sunday. The Titans will also get DT Jason Jones back after he has missed three weeks with a foot sprain.
