--WR Mike Williams was waived after an up-and-down training camp. Williams had flashed during OTAs and appeared to be in much better shape after having lost 30 pounds in the offseason. Still, he was plagued by inconsistency, drops and overall attitude. Williams had dropped to fourth on the depth chart the day before, and two days before had dropped a wide-open post pattern pass from Kerry Collins in the end zone.
--To replace WR Mike Williams on the roster, the Titans signed WR Chris Davis, giving them two players with that name on the roster. They already had 2007 fourth-round pick Chris Davis from Florida State, and the new Chris Davis is from Wake Forest and spent time with the New York Jets. The two Davises are familiar with each other, as both are from St. Petersburg, Fla., and even played Pop Warner football together from the time they were 8.
--The Titans lost two kickers in one day when All-Pro K Rob Bironas and backup P Josh Miller both suffered groin injuries. Bironas suffered his injury during his approach on a kickoff, and said it was not a big deal.
However, after using third-string QB Ingle Martin, who kicked a 50-plus yarder in practice, for one day, the Titans signed John Vaughn to kick while Bironas is out. Vaughn was in camp with the Titans last season and kicked for the Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League.
--The season of DE Ulrich Winkler, a German national who spent last year on Tennessee's practice squad, ended early when he suffered a torn ACL during pass-rushing drills early in camp. Winkler was waived-injured and will be placed on injured reserve. He is scheduled for surgery on Aug. 6. To replace him on the roster, DT Eric Taylor, who was waived before camp started, was re-signed.
BATTLE OF THE WEEK: Chris Carr, Chris Johnson, Chris Davis (Florida State), Justin McCareins, Brandon Jones and Lavelle Hawkins are all in the competition for the Titans' various return jobs on punts and kickoffs -- Carr, a restricted free agent from Oakland, would appear to be the favorite to land the punt return job, while Johnson, the first-round pick with 4.24 speed, is the frontrunner on kickoffs, because the Titans want to utilize his speed in that capacity. The Titans would prefer not to use Jones or McCareins in that role, as they are near the top of the wide receiver pecking order.
OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: The race for third defensive end behind starters Kyle Vanden Bosch and Jevon Kearse could be interesting one. Fourth-round pick William Hayes is raw, but the Titans think he can be the long-term answer. Jacob Ford, after missing his entire rookie year with an Achilles injury, has flashed at times. Holdover Sean Conover will try to hang on to his roster spot, while journeyman Dave Hall is a hard worker who might pull the upset and land a job.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: WR Brandon Jones -- For three years, the Titans have preached consistency to Jones. Finally, it appears the 2005 third-round pick might be getting it. Jones, who has been plagued by ups and downs as well as injuries, quickly stole the No. 1 slot receiver spot away from Biren Ealy in reps, and has yet to relinquish it. When Justin McCareins needed a few days off because of a tight hamstring, Jones was running with the first team, and impressing coaches with his ability to run good routes and catch the ball with ease.
ROOKIE REPORT: Undrafted S Tony Joiner is a long-shot to make the 53-man roster, but he has been playing aggressively every chance he gets. Joiner, on at least three different days, has leveled an impressive hit, and on Aug. 2, his jolt of FB Jeremy Cain resulted in a fumble in a live full-pad drill. ...
Chris Johnson, the Titans' first-round pick, is as fast as advertised, and the Titans and those around the team are eager to see how his speed will translate in more live drills when the St. Louis Rams come to town for two days of practice on Wednesday and Thursday before Saturday's preseason opener.
INJURY REPORT: WR Roydell Williams (ankle) passed his physcial and was removed from the PUP list.
CB Cary Williams (quadriceps injury) passed his physical and was removed from the PUP list. The seventh-round pick is regarded as a project this season, and has yet to see the field for any training-camp work.
WR Edward Williams (groin) missed a few days of practice, but returned Saturday with a dazzling catch.
K Rob Bironas (groin) is out of action after suffering the injury on July 29. That same day, P Josh Miller also suffered a groin injury. K John Vaughn was signed to fill in for Bironas.
DE Ulrich Winkler tore his ACL and will be lost for the year. The Titans waived him injured.
WR Justin McCareins missed a couple of practices with hamstring tightness, but the injury is not believed to be serious.
RB LenDale White jammed his wrist Friday and has been limited since.
DE Jevon Kearse's knee tightened on July 30, forcing him to miss two days before returning.
