The biggest question facing the Titans this week is when or if Pro Bowl defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch will be able to play against the Green Bay Packers.
Vanden Bosch practiced for a second consecutive day as he attempts to make his way back from a strained groin originally suffered against the Baltimore Ravens. Vanden Bosch sat out Monday night's game, ending his streak of 54 straight starts as a Titan.
Vanden Bosch admitted that the decision to sit out in the short term and make himself as close as possible to 100 percent for the long term was mostly his.
"For the most part, the decision was up to me, and it was one of the toughest decisions I've ever had to make," Vanden Bosch said. "I could do some things. I couldn't accelerate coming off of blocks, and I couldn't run to the ball. That took away, in my opinion, a lot of my effectiveness, and what I contribute to this defense. So again, I had 100 percent confidence in the guys behind me that they could get the job done."
The Titans also got Vanden Bosch's scheduled replacement last week, Dave Ball, back on the practice field. Ball suffered a concussion on the opening kickoff and gave way to Jacob Ford, but was a full participant in Thursday's practice.
Only rookie William Hayes, out a second straight day Thursday, was missing from the defensive line rotation.
PLAYER NOTES
--KR Chris Carr has not practiced yet this week because of a sore back. Carr, after a slow start, has become a weapon in terms of field position with a 29.6 kickoff return average and a 10-yard punt return average. Carr likely will go Sunday, but if he cannot, the Titans have several options, including receivers Chris Davis, Brandon Jones or Lavelle Hawkins on punts and either Davis or Michael Griffin on kickoffs.
--LB Colin Allred, a special teams player bothered by a strained groin, has begun doing activities on the side and running, but might miss another week.
--WR Lavelle Hawkins, after a rough battle to get on the field earlier in his rookie season, is beginning to gain the confidence of the coaching staff and quarterback Kerry Collins. Hawkins made a nice sideline catch to move the chains against the Colts Monday night, and has improved his route running and playbook knowledge.
--RB Quinton Ganther, knocked out of the Monday night game with a concussion, was a full participant in Thursday's practice. He sat out on Wednesday.
--K Rob Bironas saw his streak of field goals come to an end after tying Al Del Greco's club record of 20 in a row. Bironas had made his first 12 this season and final eight to close last year before missing a 43-yarder Monday night.
--TE Bo Scaife continues to be a go-to guy in the passing game. Scaife has 28 receptions to lead the team. Running back Chris Johnson is next closest with 18.
GAME PLAN: Tennessee saw the unexpected Monday night from Indianapolis, as the Colts inserted an extra linebacker into the game and abandoned their conventional Tampa 2 look. To combat that, Tennessee took to the air with Kerry Collins completing 24 of 37 passes for 193 yards. The Titans will again try to force the issue at least early, sending Chris Johnson into the fray against yet another defense that has had issues stopping the run. (Green Bay is 25th vs. the run).
Defensively, the Titans have to win on third down, as Aaron Rodgers and the Packers have converted 44.8 percent of their third-down tries thus far, something that has been a strength this season. Tennessee's defense has done getting opponents off the field, as well allowing a 35.7 percent conversion rate on defense.
MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Titans RT David Stewart vs. Packers LDE Aaron Kampman. Kampman is a two-time Pro Bowl selection and already has six sacks this season, and will be a challenge for Stewart and a Titans offensive line that has allowed just two sacks this year. Stewart is a brawler who likes to mix it up, making this a matchup to watch.
Titans CBs Nick Harper and Cortland Finnegan vs. Packers WRs Greg Jennings and Donald Driver. The Titans shut down the Colts' tandem of Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison Monday night, holding them to just four combined receptions. Jennings has been the Packers' big-play threat, averaging 18.5 yards per catch on 37 receptions, meaning he will command major attention from a Titans secondary that has 12 interceptions through seven games. Jennings caught a 68-yard pass from Aaron Rodgers on the first play of the game in a preseason matchup between the teams.
INJURY IMPACT: The Titans were able to get by Indianapolis by keeping DE Kyle Vanden Bosch on the sideline to rest his strained groin. To complicate matters, backup Dave Ball suffered a concussion on the opening kickoff against the Colts and did not play at all, leaving Jacob Ford and rookie William Hayes to fill in. Ball's status for Sunday is unclear at this point.
Reserve LB Colin Allred is also down with a groin strain, but was running on the side.
