The bye week comes at a good time for the Titans, who are plenty dinged up after physical games with the Minnesota Vikings and Baltimore Ravens in back-to-back weeks.
The bye week practices have been light and a number of veterans are idle altogether. On Wednesday, the entire starting defensive line was out of action in practice. Kyle Vanden Bosch (groin) and Tony Brown (ankle) were resting, while Albert Haynesworth and Jevon Kearse were rested. Also, defensive end Jacob Ford, a key backup, was given the day off as well. To help cope with the shortages, the Titans signed DL Charles Bennett to the practice squad Wednesday and waived QB Preston Parsons.
Other veterans are getting rest time as well, including QB Kerry Collins, WRs Justin Gage and Justin McCareins, CB Nick Harper and KR Chris Carr. CB Reynaldo Hill is still rehabbing from a hamstring injury.
PLAYER PERSONNEL NOTES
--RB LenDale White said a shoulder injury that he originally hurt against Cincinnati in Week 2 is what caused him to have only three carries at Baltimore Sunday. The Titans have increased the role of rookie Chris Johnson in recent weeks, as he got 18 attempts Sunday. The two backs had been in a virtual 50-50 split over the first three games, but Johnson has decidedly had more carries the past two games.
--DE Kyle Vanden Bosch has started 53 consecutive games for the Titans and had apparently finished every one until Sunday's first-half groin injury shelved him against Baltimore. Vanden Bosch is optimistic he can recover in time to face the Chiefs on Oct. 19.
--QB Vince Young is being integrated back into the offense during the bye week as starter Kerry Collins takes time to rest. Offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger said he expects Young to take the same professional approach to preparation that Collins did as a backup when the roles were reversed and Young was the starter.
--WR Lavelle Hawkins is a guy who could benefit from the week off in a positive way. Hawkins shows flashes of ability and doesn't lack for confidence, but has been behind as a rookie who missed half of preseason with an ankle injury. The Titans would like to see him take a step forward so they have enough confidence to put him into the offensive game plan.
--TE Bo Scaife has become the Titans' most reliable receiver, leading the club with 20 catches through five games. That is somewhat surprising, considering the Titans went out and signed veteran Alge Crumpler at tight end in the off-season. Crumpler has just seven catches, but did haul in the game-winner, an 11-yarder with 1:56 to play, against Baltimore.
INJURY IMPACT:
--One reporter remarked that the Titans practice this week resembled Club Med. A number of veteran players are being rested and doing rehab work this week in an effort to return against the Kansas City Chiefs. The primary concerns are three starters -- DE Kyle Vanden Bosch (groin), WR Justin Gage (knee) and DT Tony Brown (ankle). Titans coach Jeff Fisher said he expects all three should be ready to go by the time the Titans travel to Kansas City for an Oct. 19 game. Gage missed Sunday's game in Baltimore, his second game out of the lineup this season. He had missed the Houston game with a groin strain.
