Tennessee Titans Strategy and Personnel 2008-08-18
The Titans locked up CB Cortland Finnegan with a four-year extension worth a reported $16.8 million. The move represents a departure from previous dealings in that Finnegan still had two years (2008 and '09) remaining on his original rookie deal.

The Titans believe Finnegan is the best cornerback they have had in quite some time -- and that includes Adam "Pacman" Jones. Therefore, locking him up long-term was a move that had to be made.

--The Titans are making sure to try and get their best personnel in the right spots, even when it comes to backups in this camp. LB Stephen Tulloch lost out to Ryan Fowler for the starting middle linebacker job last year, but coaches believe Tulloch is their best backup, so he has spent the offseason learning the outside positions as well. Tulloch started in place of David Thornton (who had soreness) against Oakland and was credited with five tackles.

--Likewise, the Titans are trying to find out who their next-best cornerback is behind starters Finnegan and Nick Harper. With Harper out against the Raiders because of a concussion, the Titans gave Eric King the start. Reynaldo Hill had replaced Harper the week before against the Rams.

BATTLE OF THE WEEK: LenDale White is still the starter in name, but Chris Johnson, the Titans' first-round pick, continues to push and could get to a point where he could have half the snaps once the regular season starts. Johnson, who had a 66-yard run against St. Louis, had two runs of 15 yards each on his first two carries. White had a 22-yard rush in the first quarter.

OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: The supposed battle between Eugene Amano and Leroy Harris at left guard never materialized, as Amano got the lion's share of reps all through camp and preseason with the first team. Harris is now apparently seen as the heir apparent to veteran center Kevin Mawae and the top interior backup.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: QB Ingle Martin -- Martin has had a good training camp for a third-stringer trying to force his way onto the 53-man roster or at least earn a second straight year on the practice squad. Martin's 82-yard drive that led Tennessee past Oakland included two third-down throws to Biren Ealy and a 26-yard pass to Chris Davis that set up John Vaughn's winning field goal.

ROOKIE REPORT: Lavelle Hawkins caught a 51-yard touchdown pass and also looked good returning punts and kickoffs. Hawkins has very little experience as a punt returner, but caught the ball smoothly. ... Chris Johnson has been a lightning bolt as a running back, but struggled on kickoff returns with an end-zone muff for a touchback. ... Undrafted S Tony Joiner and fourth-round pick Stanford Keglar forced and recovered a fumble by Oakland's Oren O'Neal that snuffed out a game-clinching drive and set up Martin's game-winning drive.

INJURY REPORT: RT David Stewart had arthroscopic surgery on his knee to repair a flap tear and will probably miss the rest of the preseason.

LB Keith Bulluck could be slowed with a left calf strain.

WR Lavelle Hawkins will likely miss a week or more with a sprained left ankle suffered on a kickoff return.

CB Cary Williams re-injured his quadriceps against Oakland.

K Rob Bironas (groin) should begin kicking this week and might be available Friday against Atlanta.

TE Dwayne Blakley (groin) could return this week as well.

Others who could return to practice this week include DE Jacob Ford (hamstring), WR Roydell Williams (ankle), LB David Thornton (soreness), CB Nick Harper (concussion) and LB Kurt Campbell (ribs).
