Tennessee Titans Strategy and Personnel 2009-04-07

Tennessee Titans Strategy and Personnel 2009-04-07
The Titans made a small move to shore up depth in the secondary by adding cornerback DeMarcus Faggins, and could be closer to making a potential major upgrade at wide receiver, if they can land former St. Louis Rams star Torry Holt, who was in for a visit.

If the Titans can do that, they can enter the draft clearly in a position to go with the best player available, knowing that they don't have to land an immediate impact player this time around.

Of course, if the player does make a big splash early, all the better. The Titans hit a home run last year with Chris Johnson, and would love to find a playmaking receiver or impact defensive player who could step in as a nice luxury for a team coming off a 13-3 season.

TEAM NEEDS/OFFSEASON STRATEGY

The addition of Faggins puts one extra body at the cornerback position behind starters Nick Harper and Cortland Finnegan. Previously, Cary Williams (one game last year) was all that was behind the two starters. And while Faggins might well get drafted over or trumped by waiver pickup at the end of the preseason, he at least provides needed experience to the second unit for now.

TEAM NEEDS

1. Wide receiver: From an experience standpoint, this now becomes Tennessee's No. 1 need area in the short run - barring, of course, the signing of Holt. Justin Gage is solid, but had injury issues in '08, while the Titans believe free-agent pickup Nate Washington can be a long-term answer. Beyond that, the cupboard is bare as Lavelle Hawkins, Paul Williams and Chris Davis are on the spot to produce in camp. For Williams and Davis, entering their third seasons, it is likely produce or be gone.

2. Cornerback: Still a need area depth-wise, despite the addition of Faggins. The Titans have made a habit of gambling late on cornerbacks in recent years with mixed results on three seventh-rounders. Cortland Finnegan became a star; Reynaldo Hill maxed out and became a backup, while the jury is still out on Cary Williams. Using a higher pick this time is a must.

3. Outside linebacker: Yet another spot where the Titans have not spent a high pick in a long time. Keith Bulluck was their last first-rounder here nine years ago. Depth behind Bulluck and David Thornton is all but non-existent, and this situation has to be addressed in the draft.

MEDICAL WATCH: No updates.

FRANCHISE PLAYER: TE Bo Scaife: Tendered at $4.462M.

TRANSITION PLAYER: None.

--CB Reynaldo Hill, a former starter who was shoved to the back of the depth chart the past two years, is probably best off finding a fresh start elsewhere.

--WR Justin McCareins came back to the Titans for a second tour of duty, but was injured and a bit of a disappointment. The Titans haven't ruled out his return completely, but they will probably look at other options first.

--CB Tyrone Poole, a veteran who signed on in November after a rash of cornerback injuries, was used sparingly and won't return. It could be his final NFL stop after 14 seasons.
