Tennessee Titans Strategy and Personnel 2009-03-27
The Titans are now headed into the draft evaluation part of the off-season with the draft just a month away and pro days popping up all over the place.

Still, there is the potential to add a free agent or two before the draft starts. The Titans are known to have interest in receiver Torry Holt, formerly of the St. Louis Rams, and are in search of depth at cornerback behind starters Cortland Finnegan and Nick Harper. As well, another quarterback, perhaps Patrick Ramsey, is not out of the question either.

Still, the draft is the more important part of what the Titans do, and picking up four extra compensation picks to push their total number of choices to 10 is music to the ears of an organization that largely likes to develop its own talent and supplement it with the occasional free agent.

The Titans are pretty much done with any of their own free agents who remain available on the open market. When Chris Carr signed with Baltimore, it marked the last player the team had on the market that they had any significant interest in retaining. There is still the outside possibility that receiver Justin McCareins could return with a minimum deal, but the Titans are trying to upgrade there.

A free agent or two from the outside is still likely, but the focus now shifts to the NFL draft, which is just one month away with the Titans in a position of not needing any starters, but drafting for depth in a number of key areas.

1. Cornerback: Tennessee is fine in terms of starters with Cortland Finnegan and Nick Harper, but depth is the No. 1 issue on the club right now. The defections of Eric King and Chris Carr have left only Cary Williams, an untested second-year man who played in one game last year, behind them. Drafting a corner and adding one in free agency are both possibilities.

2. Wide receiver: Running a close second to cornerback depth is the need to add more at the wide receiver position. The Titans currently do not have a slot receiver with any measurable resume' on their roster to play behind Justin Gage and Nate Washington, who are currently the starters.

3. Outside linebacker: Another issue in terms of depth, because the Titans have David Thornton and Keith Bulluck, who are both dependable and solid players. Behind them, it gets thin quickly with untested Colin Allred and Stanford Keglar along with special teamer Josh Stamer.

MEDICAL WATCH: Center Kevin Mawae (elbow), defensive end Dave Ball (back) and cornerback Nick Harper (groin) are all ahead of schedule in their recoveries from their respective surgeries. All should be 100 percent by training camp.

FRANCHISE PLAYER: TE Bo Scaife: Tendered at $4.462M.

--CB Reynaldo Hill, a former starter who was shoved to the back of the depth chart the past two years, is probably best off finding a fresh start elsewhere.

--WR Justin McCareins came back to the Titans for a second tour of duty, but was injured and a bit of a disappointment. The Titans haven't ruled out his return completely, but they will probably look at other options first.

--CB Tyrone Poole, a veteran who signed on in November after a rash of cornerback injuries, was used sparingly and won't return. It could be his final NFL stop after 14 seasons.

--LB Colin Allred: ERFA; terms unknown.

--PK Rob Bironas: Potential UFA; $12M/4 yrs, $5M guaranteed.

--QB Kerry Collins: UFA; $14M/2 yrs, $4M SB/$8.5M guaranteed; 2009 cap: $6.5M.

--DT Kevin Vickerson: Potential RFA; $535,000/1 yr.

--WR/KR Mark Jones: UFA Panthers; terms unknown.

--WR Nate Washington: UFA Steelersd; terms unknown.

--DT Albert Haynesworth: UFA Redskins; $100M/7 yrs, $41M guaranteed.

--CB/KR Chris Carr: UFA Ravens; $5M/2 yrs, guarantees unknown.

--WR Brandon Jones: UFA 49ers; $16.6M/5 yrs, $5.4M guaranteed.

--CB Eric King: UFA Lions; $4.25M/2 yrs, SB unknown.
