Tennessee Titans Strategy and Personnel 2009-03-20

Tennessee Titans Strategy and Personnel 2009-03-20
Despite their losses on defense that include coordinator Jim Schwartz and All-Pro defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, the Titans return the majority of one of the league's top defenses from a year ago. In fact, new defensive coordinator Chuck Cecil will have 10 of 11 starters back from last year, and second-year man Jason Jones primed to step in for Haynesworth.

Still, depth is needed at several positions on defense where age is beginning to show and contracts are at an end after 2009. Those who can be free agents after this season include defensive linemen Tony Brown, Kyle Vanden Bosch, Dave Ball and Jevon Kearse, linebackers Keith Bulluck and Stephen Tulloch and cornerback Nick Harper. Look for the Titans to move toward locking up a few of those over the summer and use the draft as a way to replenish certain areas.

TEAM NEEDS/OFFSEASON STRATEGY

When it comes to free agency, the Titans are budget shoppers. You won't find them scanning the racks at Saks Fifth Ave. very often. More likely they'll be at K-Mart shopping the bargain bins.

General manager Mike Reinfeldt's strategy is to set a value for each player, including the team's own free agents, and not stray too far from that. Sometimes, it causes valuable players to get away, such as Chris Carr and Eric King in the secondary, and of course, Albert Haynesworth, who took a monster deal with Washington.

But Reinfeldt has done a decent job of filling the holes, adding return man Mark Jones just this week to replace Carr. Still, there are needs in the secondary and at receiver, which might be address still in free agency or the draft.

TEAM NEEDS

1. Wide receiver: The Titans signed Mark Jones to an undisclosed contract on Tuesday, but Jones won't figure much into the mix at receiver, even though that is his position of trade. Instead, he will fill the return void that took place when Chris Carr signed with Baltimore. The Titans are still expected to make a run at Torry Holt, who became a free agent after being let go by St. Louis.

2. Cornerback: Carr's departure leaves the Titans with only untested Cary Williams behind starters Cortland Finnegan and Nick Harper at this spot. They have been busy bringing in free agent visitors like Donald Strickland and DeMarcus Faggins, and likely will add at least one corner in free agency and another in the draft.

3. Linebacker: Not a pressing need right now, unless David Thornton or Keith Bulluck go down with an injury. But depth must be addressed here. The Titans had journeyman Jamie Winborn in for a visit last week, and could shop for more help at linebacker, especially the outside spots.

MEDICAL WATCH: No updates.

FRANCHISE PLAYER: TE Bo Scaife: Tendered at $4.462M.

TRANSITION PLAYER: None.

UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

--CB Reynaldo Hill, a former starter who was shoved to the back of the depth chart the past two years, is probably best off finding a fresh start elsewhere.

--WR Justin McCareins came back to the Titans for a second tour of duty, but was injured and a bit of a disappointment. The Titans haven't ruled out his return completely, but they will probably look at other options first.

--CB Tyrone Poole, a veteran who signed on in November after a rash of cornerback injuries, was used sparingly and won't return. It could be his final NFL stop after 14 seasons.

EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS FREE AGENTS: None.
