Tennessee Titans Strategy and Personnel 2009-03-17

Tennessee Titans Strategy and Personnel 2009-03-17
Except for the wide receiver position, where the need to upgrade has been nearly a perpetual reality for Jeff Fisher teams, the Titans remaining forays into free agency and the draft, for that matter, will be to replenish depth.

DT Albert Haynesworth is the only real glaring loss for the Titans among their starters, though receivers Brandon Jones (49ers) and Justin McCareins (unsigned) both saw extensive action a year ago.

That means doing what general manager Mike Reinfeldt does best, scouring through the bargain bins looking for help to bolster the back of the roster at a number of positions, including quarterback, tackle, cornerback and linebacker.

And what doesn't get filled in free agency, the Titans appear confident they can find in the April draft.

TEAM NEEDS/OFFSEASON STRATEGY

The Titans have taken their usual approach to free agency, using a prudent method of establishing a value and rarely going past that value to retain or lure players to Nashville.

It might have bitten them in the Albert Haynesworth negotiations, as the situation quickly got away from them in the early hours of free agency, after it became clear the Titans were never going to come close to the $41 million guaranteed Haynesworth got from the Redskins.

Since that time, the Titans biggest haul has been receiver Nate Washington and their retaining of quarterback Kerry Collins. Elsewhere, the Titans have shopped for role players, re-signing nickel back Vincent Fuller and hosting a number of players like cornerback Justin Miller, linebacker Jamie Winborn and quarterback Patrick Ramsey, who, if signed, could fit needed backup roles on the team.

TEAM NEEDS

1. Cornerback: Tennessee's secondary has been a strength the past couple of seasons, as three of the four players made the Pro Bowl. However, depth behind the first five (starters plus nickel back Vincent Fuller) is spotty at best, and the Titans need to address the issue, either with a bargain free agent or two or in the draft. Re-signing Chris Carr, who doubles as their return man, should be a priority, unless he prices himself out of their range.

2. Wide receiver. Justin Gage is the only returnee with any significant resume, and the Titans are banking on free agent pickup Nate Washington to solidify the position. But there are major concerns behind those two, as Lavelle Hawkins, Paul Williams and Chris Davis are all unproven. Of that trio, Hawkins would appear to have the brightest future.

3. Linebacker: Depth is something of an issue here. Fortunately for the Titans, starters Keith Bulluck, David Thornton and Stephen Tulloch were all durable last season. But given that an injury can occur at any moment, the Titans need to address the depth here both in free agency and the draft.

MEDICAL WATCH: No updates.

FRANCHISE PLAYER: TE Bo Scaife: Tendered at $4.462M.

UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

--CB Reynaldo Hill, a former starter who was shoved to the back of the depth chart the past two years, is probably best off finding a fresh start elsewhere.

--WR Justin McCareins came back to the Titans for a second tour of duty, but was injured and a bit of a disappointment. The Titans haven't ruled out his return completely, but they will probably look at other options first.

--CB Tyrone Poole, a veteran who signed on in November after a rash of cornerback injuries, was used sparingly and won't return. It could be his final NFL stop after 14 seasons.
