Tennessee Titans Notes, Quotes 2008-08-11

Tennessee Titans Notes, Quotes 2008-08-11
--The Titans twice challenged officials calls in the first preseason game against the St. Louis Rams and both times lost the review. On the first one, receiver Biren Ealy was ruled out of bounds on a first-half catch. Replays showed Ealy's right foot came down on the line.

The other call looked more likely to be overruled. It came when third-string quarterback Ingle Martin went airborne and tried to stretch the ball over the goal line before going of bounds. After being marked out inside the 1, Martin could be seen from the huddle urging the Titans coaches to throw the challenge flag, even with a 27-13 lead at the time. Coach Jeff Fisher threw the flag, but the call eventually stood because there was no definitive replay showing Martin had scored.

--WR Edward Williams is maybe the longest of long shots among the Titans wide receivers. But the 25-year-old undrafted free agent has already beaten plenty of odds just to get into an NFL training camp.

Williams, who played at Lane College (about two hours west of Nashville in Jackson, Tenn.), was actually out of football for three years before resuming his college career at the Division II school in 2005.

He came back to football only because L.C. Cole, the coach who had originally recruited him to Alabama State, surfaced at Lane and asked Williams, who was attending school at Alabama State but not playing football, to come play for him.

"I had decided I was through with football," Williams said. "Then when Coach Cole got to Lane College, he called me and asked me if I wanted to come there and play. I had to think about it. But he stayed in touch with me, and left a couple of not-so-nice messages on my machine, so I finally decided to give football another try."

Williams enjoyed a strong practice on Aug. 7 against the Rams, making a diving catch for a touchdown and catching a ball in a two-minute drill even while losing his shoe.

--The Titans' joint practices with the Rams got off to a raucous start on Aug. 6 with a full pad practice that saw four fights between the Tennessee defense and St. Louis offense.

Cornerback Cortland Finnegan tangled with Rams receiver Reche Caldwell, who later tried to punch Titans linebacker Keith Bulluck, setting off another melee.

Titans DE Kyle Vanden Bosch could be seen in another skirmish punching Adam Goldberg of the Rams, and Vanden Bosch, even without a helmet, was quick back into the fray on the next play when Sean Conover and Mark LeVoir got into an altercation.

"You know this defense. We're a tough, rough defense. We don't back down from anybody, and that's how we've always played," Haynesworth said. "Ever since that day that Lance Schulters gave us that nickname the Tennessee Tyrants, that's what we've been trying to live up to."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Man, I wanted to watch the other field. I wanted to go over there so bad." -- Titans TE Alge Crumpler, on seeing from two fields away the Titans defense and Rams offense.
