Tennessee Titans Notes, Quotes 2009-01-02
--RB Chris Johnson wants a recount in the voting for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. Specifically, Johnson, who finished second in the balloting to Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, would like the voting to be done by players instead of the 50 media members who participated in the process overseen by the Associated Press.

"Of course, it would have been different," Johnson said. "I had the most votes of any rookie (for the Pro Bowl), more than Matt Ryan. I'm the only one that made it to the Pro Bowl out of all the rookies."

The Pro Bowl vote is divided into thirds with fans, coaches and players each having a say.

Johnson rushed for 1,228 yards this season and scored nine touchdowns. Ryan threw 16 touchdown passes and was intercepted 11 times while guiding the Falcons to an 11-5 record and a playoff berth.

"He's a good player, and he played quarterback and did a good job this year," Johnson said of Ryan. "But the whole thing is bogus, because people are voting for it that are not on the same field as the people who are playing.

"I'm disappointed. I did all I could to win it. I feel I did the best. I feel I did all I could do to win it; it just didn't come my way."

Tight end Bo Scaife agreed that Johnson should have been the Offensive Rookie of the Year.

"He's the only rookie going to the Pro Bowl, so he's got to be the Rookie of the Year," Scaife said. "And we've got the best record in the NFL. Chris Johnson has got my vote. I'm sure if they left it up to the players, Chris Johnson would get most of the votes."

--Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz's name continues to surface regarding head coaching vacancies. According to league sources, both the Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions have Schwartz on their radar and will apparently interview him this weekend.

Cleveland's interest in Schwartz could also be precipitated by their pursuit of New England Patriots executive Scott Pioli as their general manager. Schwartz and Pioli have ties from earlier in their respective careers in Cleveland, though Pioli apparently also has interest in Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, according to reports.

As for the woebegone Lions, Schwartz is apparently one of a number of candidates the club is interested in talking to before filling its coaching vacancy in the wake of posting the NFL's first 0-16 season.

BY THE NUMBERS: 2 -- Where the Titans' defense finished in terms of points allowed after playing backups and giving up 23 in a shutout loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Tennessee allowed 234 points this season to 223 by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I celebrated my 36th birthday yesterday. Myself, Tiger Woods and LeBron James, I'm the best athlete of the three. I don't feel 36, however you're supposed to feel. I feel about 10 years younger." - Titans QB Kerry Collins, who turned 36 on Tuesday, sharing a birthday with Woods and James.
