Asked about the haircut by reporters, Nickey smiled and asked, "Don't you guys have anything better to write about than my haircut?"
--The Titans held the first evening practice at Baptist Sports Park in the history of the franchise on Friday, drawing an estimated 2,000 fans to the workout.
In the past, when Titans coach Jeff Fisher had wanted to put the team through a night-time practice, he had to move the workout to LP Field, which was closed to fans but open to the media only. So the Titans installed lights around one of their three practice fields with the idea of not having to use their home stadium.
"It's exactly what we expected and exactly why we put the lights in," Fisher said. "It's great that the fans were able to come out tonight and see a very good practice."
The players seemed to enjoy the atmosphere as well.
"I could tell there was a different energy tonight. Guys were flying around and we had one of our best practices of the preseason. It was a nice change-up," quarterback Kerry Collins said.
--Though it is viewed from afar, the Brett Favre situation is still a topic of interest for the entire NFL.
Quarterback Ingle Martin, who spent his rookie season as the third string behind Favre and Aaron Rodgers in 2006, weighed in on the matter.
"I think it's a tough situation for Aaron (Rodgers) and for Brett," Martin said. "Brett wants to play. They're not going to let him even compete for it, and Aaron's been told he's the starter. Obviously, if you've been told you're the starter, and the old starter wants to come back, you're going to have a problem with that.
"As far as I'm concerned, it's kind of a no-win for all of them. But I think the Packers probably have a whole lot more to lose than Brett does. He's one of the best quarterbacks ever to play the game, and if he can't have his job back and you go 8-8, things aren't going to be looking good for the guys making those decisions. It's just one of those things where you make a decision and I guess you have to stick with it."
---Rookie defensive lineman Jason Jones is spending most of his time at tackle, while four others battle for the backup defensive end spots. While some teams had Jones projected as an end -- and he can fill in there if need be -- the Titans like him just fine as a tackle, even though he weighs only 276 pounds in camp.
"That's what I played most of the time in college, so right now I'm comfortable at that position," Jones said. "But I've still got to know both positions in case I get bumped out to end."
--The Titans waived receiver Mike Williams on Thursday, just before the afternoon practice, but had inadvertently left his name on the list of autograph signers for that day after the practice. The list of players available for autographs appears on a dry erase board at the gate entrance to the practice field. An intern was sent to correct the mistake.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's all up to Mike (Williams). Mike has to make a decision. If Mike really wants to play football, then he's going to have to get hungry. He's going to have to show people that this is what he really wants. No disrespect to Mike Williams, I love him. That's like my family. ... But at the same time, it ain't about if the teams want him. He's going to have to want it himself and show people that Mike Williams is serious about playing football." -- Former Southern California teammate and friend LenDale White, on WR Mike Williams, who was waived on Thursday, and his dedication to football.
