Tennessee Titans Notes, Quotes 2008-08-18
--There may not be room enough for third-string quarterback Ingle Martin to stick on the 53-man roster, but the Nashville native is certainly giving the Titans something to think about with his play in the preseason.

Martin completed six of 11 passes for 103 yards and drove the Titans 82 yards in 11 plays to what proved to be John Vaughn's game-winning field goal at the final horn against Oakland.

Martin, who played locally at Montgomery Bell Academy before going to Florida and then Furman, spent last year on Tennessee's practice squad after being waived by Green Bay.

"There's always that concern, at any position, that if a player plays well at his position in the preseason and doesn't make your 53-man roster, there's always the possibility that he will be claimed," Titans coach Jeff Fisher said.

Martin's 26-yard pass to Chris Davis put the ball at the 15-yard line to set up the game-winning kick.

--Rookie wide receiver Lavelle Hawkins had a touchdown celebration pre-planned with fellow rookie Chris Johnson, and then when he scored on a 51-yard pass from Kerry Collins in the third quarter, he was so excited about his first pro score, he forgot the celebration skit.

"We had a touchdown celebration for the end zone. I said, 'Chris, after we score, run to the end zone,' but then I totally forgot," Hawkins said.

Hawkins, a fourth-round pick from Cal, had two catches for 70 yards and also returned punts and kickoffs in the second half before leaving with a sprained ankle.

--A comment from former Chicago Bears receiver Muhsin Muhammad, now with Carolina, that said, "Chicago is where receivers go to die," elicited a laugh from Titans receiver Justin Gage, himself a former Bear.

Gage was a bit more diplomatic regarding his time in Chicago, even though he had just four catches his final year there before catching 55 passes last year for the Titans.

"I think when guys went to Chicago, they were talented, and they never got a chance to really step out (of) the shell or really show what they had or things like that," Gage said.

--The Titans were careful with defensive end Jevon Kearse throughout training camp, never working him more than once a day and sometimes giving him multiple practices in a row off. Kearse has played in both preseason games, however.

"Everything that's going on right now, they're doing it for a reason. I'm doing it for a reason, and they're doing it for a reason. It's all going to work out," Kearse said. "Basically, we're on the same page when it comes to that, not trying to overdo it when it comes to camp. As long as I'm ready to go on Sept. 7, that's what we're looking for right now."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "If people (are) panicking over this, then I don't know who they're cheering for. If you're going to be a fan, you're going to stick with him through the rough times and the good times. Not every game is Vince going to come out and go 10-for-10 with 300 yards and three TDs." -- RB LenDale White, over the criticism of Vince Young's preseason play.
