Tennessee Titans Notes, Quotes 2009-03-09
--QB Kerry Collins never wanted to leave the Titans, and so his foray into unrestricted free agency was a relatively short one. Hours after losing DT Albert Haynesworth, the Titans saved some face by re-signing Collins to a two-year, $15 million deal that allows him to return as the starting quarterback.

"I am relieved to get it done," Collins said. "This is where I wanted to be and my family loves Nashville. It is just part of the process - free agency comes about and there are lots of talks and rumors. At the end of the day, this is where I want to be and I am happy it worked out."

--While Kerry Collins is staying, Chris Simms is moving on, signing a two-year, $6 million deal with the Denver Broncos. That leaves the Titans with only Collins and Vince Young, meaning they could shop for a third quarterback in free agency or the draft.

Simms goes to Denver after spending just one season in Tennessee, where he spent much of his time as the third-string quarterback and getting himself healthy after suffering a ruptured spleen in a game in 2006. The spleen had to be removed and Simms did not play at all in 2007. He worked with Titans trainers to regain his strength and mechanics and wanted to stay with the team and compete with Young for the backup job, but the Broncos' offer was too lucrative to pass up.

--P Craig Hentrich re-signed with Tennessee, with The Tennessean reporting it to be a one-year, $1.8 million deal.

Hentrich had been expected to retire after 15 NFL seasons, but after some rest and relaxation for his back and a chance to reflect on his future, the 38-year-old punter decided to give it one more go, informing coach Jeff Fisher that he would like to return.

"I did go into this morning to Jeff (Fisher) and tell him that I wanted to be part of this team, and hopefully, we'll get something worked out," Hentrich said last Monday.

--Having lost CB Eric King to Detroit in free agency, and with CB Chris Carr globetrotting to a variety of free agent visits, the Titans are doing a little free agent work themselves at the position. On Wednesday, they hosted former Jets and Raiders cornerback Justin Miller, who not coincidentally is a return man like Carr.

Plus, on Thursday, the Titans were expected to get a look at Arizona Cardinals free agent cornerback Eric Green. The team is looking to restore some depleted depth at the cornerback position, giving the loss of King, the potential loss of Carr and their desire to upgrade over a couple of other unrestricted free agents, who will not return in Reynaldo Hill and Tyrone Poole.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I say to myself now, I'm back home. This is a place where I visited often. During Super Bowl week, this is where I was the whole week. It feels good. Vanderbilt is right up the street. I have a lot of friends here, and just to have an opportunity to play for a great organization, that was key in the decision." -- DT Jovan Haye, who signed with the Titans in free agency. Haye also played college football in Nashville at Vanderbilt.
