Tennessee Titans Notes, Quotes 2009-02-28
--TE Bo Scaife wanted to remain with the Titans, but not in the way it unfolded. The Scaife camp, according to sources, was not happy with him being hit with the franchise tag on the Feb. 19 deadline for applying it.

Scaife will make $4.46 million in 2009, but he and the Titans could continue to work on a long-term deal. General manager Mike Reinfeldt alluded to that when discussing the tag.

"I think this buys us some time," Reinfeldt said. The Titans now have until July 15 to sign Scaife or he will play for the franchise tender number.

--Former Houston and Tennessee Oilers defensive back Rayna Stewart was added to the Titans coaching staff as a defensive quality control coach. Stewart returns to Tennessee replacing Matt Burke, who joined Jim Schwartz's staff in Detroit as a linebackers coach.

Stewart's hire now means the Titans have five former NFL defensive backs on their coaching staff: head coach Jeff Fisher, defensive coordinator Chuck Cecil, secondary coach Marcus Robertson, assistant secondary coach Tim Hauck and Stewart.

--K Rob Bironas was headed for the franchise tag until he and the Titans agreed to a four-year, $12 million deal that makes Bironas the highest-paid kicker on average in the NFL.

Bironas bounced around places like the Arena Football League until he hooked on with the Titans in 2005 and won a training camp battle with long-forgotten Ola Kimrin.

"They gave me a chance when I wasn't sure if I was ever going to get that chance to play when I knew I was good enough to play, but wasn't sure if the opportunity was going to present itself," Bironas said. "So signing this contract, four years, I knew that it's paid off now and it gives me a little security. Now I just need to work a little bit harder to show everybody that I'm going to be here even longer than that afterwards."

--The other part of the Titans kicking tandem, P Craig Hentrich, still has not decided yet if he is for certain retiring. Hentrich is still likely to call it quits because of lingering back problems. If he does, the Titans might consider Josh Miller, who has had a couple of cameo roles the past two years when Hentrich was on the shelf.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "He's much quieter on the field than he was when he had a helmet on." -- Titans coach Jeff Fisher when asked if Chuck Cecil's approach as a defensive coordinator will be similar to his playing style. Cecil was once on the cover of Sports Illustrated asking if he was too vicious for the NFL.
