The Tennessee Titans came up one yard short of making NFL history on Sunday.
If LenDale White hadn't been thrown for a 1-yard loss on a fourth-down play near the end of the game on his final carry, he and Chris Johnson would have become the first tandem of running backs since 1976 to each rush for 100 yards in the same game three times in a season.
Pittsburgh Steelers running backs Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier accomplished the feat in '76.
As it was, White finished with 99 yards in Sunday's 28-9 victory over the Cleveland Browns, and Johnson went for 136.
Johnson and White, who dubbed themselves "Smash 'n Dash" and printed T-shirts to that effect, have rushed for 100 yards in the same game against both Kansas City and Detroit.
"I'm not worried about that. I'm just glad we won the ballgame," White said of losing the 100-yard rushing day.
The Titans' offense is predicated upon the rushing game, and coach Jeff Fisher said that by sharing the load, Johnson and White have helped each stay fresh late in the season.
"Chris is doing what he's doing because LenDale is doing what he's doing, and vice versa. We're keeping them fresh and they're not taking the pounding with a 30-plus (carry) game," Fisher said.
Johnson has 222 carries this season, and on Sunday became only the third rookie in franchise history to eclipse the 1,000-yard rushing mark. He has 1,094 yards for the season, joining Earl Campbell in 1978 and Eddie George in 1996.
"It feels real good," said Johnson, who reached the 1,000-yard plateau on his ninth carry of the game. "Those two guys are great guys, and they had real good careers in the league. To be mentioned with those guys is great."
White, who rushed for 1,110 yards as the Titans featured back last year, has 674 yards this year on 170 rushing attempts.
