Vince Young's progression as an NFL quarterback appears to be a long and winding road thus far in training camp.

Footwork was the key area of improvement that was preached to Young throughout the offseason, and it appears he is getting better in that regard. However, there are still errant and off-target throws that have cropped up a bit too frequently during the team drills portion of training camp.

Young has thrown fewer interceptions, but still has been off-target at times on the short to intermediate passes that he must hit on in Mike Heimerdinger's timing offense.

Young did endure one particularly rough day in practice during the early part of camp, throwing three interceptions in the team period, including two picks by his former college teammate at Texas, safety Michael Griffin.

After practice was over, Young bristled to reporters when the subject was brought up about the picks in practice.

"It's my fault like always, but there was miscommunication and stuff like that," Young said. "It's practice, but overall, we talked about it and got it cleared up. There was miscommunication on both parts. It's not always the quarterback's fault every time, but we're definitely going to talk about it."

The next day, when asked by reporters, Heimerdinger placed the blame for two of the interceptions on himself.

"Two of the picks were on me and the other one, he just forgot what route he had, so it's on him. We really didn't discuss it. I've just got to do a better job of explaining some situations for him," Heimerdinger said.

As for Young's supporting cast, two players are distinguishing themselves as much-needed potential weapons for the young quarterback.

Tight end Alge Crumpler is an imposing target down the seam and as a safety valve for Young in traffic. Crumpler, who has not missed any practice time with his knees that bothered him last year in Atlanta, has lost about 15 pounds from 2007 and is probably the Titans' best pass-catching target right now.

The other addition who has looked strong thus far is rookie first-round pick Chris Johnson, whose track-like speed and shiftiness have drawn rave reviews from onlookers.

Titans defenders, while not aiming to take a full shot at Johnson in contact drills, have had issues squaring up and getting the right angles on him at times in practice.

CAMP CALENDAR: The Titans will host the St. Louis Rams for two days of joint practices Aug. 6 and Aug. 7 before the preseason opener at LP Field on Aug. 9. Training camp breaks Aug. 20.
