Tennessee Titans Inside Slant 2009-03-14
Sometimes internet rumors take on a life of their own in a strange way that no matter how untrue they might be, there is no getting rid of the topic.

That happened to the Tennessee Titans last week, as a rumor began making the rounds that Terrell Owens and his agent Drew Rosenhaus were in Nashville and that the Titans were interested in bringing him aboard.

Of course, there was never any truth to it, as Owens later signed with the Buffalo Bills, finally killing the rumor. But for several hours, the topic was spreading like wildfire. The rumor became so hot that one Titans assistant coach even got a text message from his son asking him if Owens was at Baptist Sports Park.

The speculation apparently began with an ESPN mention that the Titans might be a good fit or Owens, who had worn out his welcome in Dallas and had several NFL teams publicly say he need not bother calling on them. Then, the rumor began to spread that Owens and Rosenhaus were spotted in the Nashville airport, leading to even further hype. It sent local media outlets contacting sources in the organization just to make sure there was nothing to it.

Owens, with his locker room sideshow, was never in play for the Titans, who are in need of another wide receiver and have not really hidden the fact that they would like to upgrade the position. However, a more likely scenario would be a potential run at Torry Holt, who was released by the St. Louis Rams.

If not Holt, the Titans might give a look on the cheap to Drew Bennett, another former Ram, who enjoyed his most productive seasons in Tennessee and knows offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger's system.

Beyond that, the Titans might try to address the issue in the draft to find some potential upgrades to go with Justin Gage and recently signed Nate Washington. Behind those two, there is little to offer, as Lavelle Hawkins has potential but is still plenty green, while Paul Williams and Chris Davis, two draft picks from 2007, are in danger of not even making the roster this fall.
