With Albert Haynesworth off to Washington, the Titans are not completely barren at the defensive tackle position. Second-year man Jason Jones will slide in alongside Tony Brown to replace Haynesworth, and the Titans will look for either a veteran player or draft pick to compete with Kevin Vickerson for the third tackle role.

Still, the Titans will most assuredly take a PR hit in some ways by allowing the best player on one of the league's best defenses to walk away with only a 2010 compensatory pick to show for it, while holding approximately $30 million in salary cap space at the beginning of the free agency period. In addition, the Titans allowed Haynesworth to easily negotiate his way out from under the franchise tag he played under in 2008 by inserting incentive clauses that he easily made with a standout season last year.

"Albert's contract situation is one that we have been dealing with since last February and we were never able to bridge the large gaps," general manager Mike Reinfeldt said in a statement. "The final face-to-face meeting with his representative was last weekend in Indianapolis, but we were unable to build up any momentum this week leading up to free agency from that meeting.

"He is obviously a great player and we were willing to make him the highest paid defensive tackle in NFL history and among the top paid defensive players in the league. Our job this offseason will continue to be improving the roster in a number of areas. We wish Albert the best in his career with the Redskins."

The question of whether allowing Haynesworth to leave was the right move surely won't be known for at least a couple of years. The Titans were roundly criticized for allowing free agents like Jevon Kearse and Kenny Holmes leave in the past to leave, but rarely has it bitten them hard.

They did move quickly to secure the quarterback position. Just hours after Haynesworth signed with Washington, quarterback Kerry Collins agreed to a two-year, $15 million deal to stay in Tennessee.

"Kerry did a great job for us last year stepping back into the starting role," Reinfeldt said in a statement. "He has veteran leadership, tons of game experience and we expect him to continue to play at a high level for us."
