Tennessee Titans Inside Slant 2008-08-11

Tennessee Titans Inside Slant 2008-08-11
Quinton Ganther, a sixth-round pick by the Titans back in 2006, has played in just four regular-season games in that two-year span. Most of his time has been spent on Tennessee's practice squad, and with three high draft choices ahead of him, Ganther's chances of sticking on the 53-man roster are probably not strong.

But the former Utah running back at least gave the coaches and front office something to think about, rushing for 115 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries in the second half of the preseason opener against the Rams.

Ganther had a 45-yard touchdown run, where he bounced a third-and-1 play outside and raced unscathed into the end zone. Later, Ganther added a two-yard run in the fourth quarter.

On the long run, Ganther said he made sure to accomplish his first mission -- getting the first down -- first before seeing the opening and the opportunity to score.

"It was third-and-1, and my thing was I wanted to push it and get that one yard," Ganther said. "When it's short yardage, you want to come downhill and get that yard. So when I did that, everyone sucked in, and I went to the outside, and the linebacker was just sitting there. He thought I was down."

Ganther at least opened some eyes with the Titans in their crowded backfield and needs to continue that. He is still a long shot, because third-stringer Chris Henry, whose instincts and ability to make split-second cuts continue to be a problem at times, will be tough to cast aside, in part because he was a second-round pick in 2007.

--For those wanting to see the new and improved Vince Young, Saturday night was a brief glance. The highlight of Young's night came on a 35-yard scramble that sent Tennessee deep into St. Louis territory. But when the Titans got to the 5-yard line on third down, the drive stalled, very reminiscent of 2007 when Tennessee finished last in the NFL in red-zone efficiency.

Young overthrew tight end Alge Crumpler in the back of the end zone on third down, and being preseason, the Titans elected to go for fourth and a long 1, but LenDale White was stuffed for no gain.

Young finished the game a meager three of six for 17 yards passing and retired to the sidelines after just two offensive series.

--Defensively, the Titans' first-team looked strong, and the defensive line might be welcoming another potential standout in second-round pick Jason Jones, who impressed in getting a start for injured Tony Brown.

Jones, playing defensive tackle alongside Albert Haynesworth, stopped running back Brian Leonard for a 3-yard loss back at the 2-yard line just one play before Keith Bulluck's interception return for a touchdown Saturday night. Jones is already drawing high praise from Haynesworth.

"He's been flashing all camp," Haynesworth said. "He's ahead of any rookie I've ever seen, including myself, over the last six or seven years. He's going to really help us this year."

CAMP CALENDAR: The Titans close training camp Aug. 20, just two days before their first road preseason game with the Atlanta Falcons on Aug. 22.
