Draft week to me means weeding out my true friends and sources from those who I need to dump fertilizer on.
We're one day shy of the most exciting day of the offseason. A day that shows us insiders just who lies to us and who actually gives us the straight scoopage. Who gives out false stories with the hope of altering a kid's availability and who simply clams up for fear that his ever-important strategy will leak.
It's amazing how three people from one team can call "just to schmooze on the way home from the office ... " and yet have three different picks they swear will be the guy. Gotta love the draft baby!
Like every year, I have been asked to pen a mock draft only to read for the remainder of the year what an idiot I am because I nailed anywhere from two to 10 (10? Yeah right!). But why not show a little vulnerability.
The following is a mock as if there are no trades besides something, somewhere for USC QB Mark Sanchez. I do believe someone will make a move for him from slots eight to 10 but who and when ... it's as much a mystery as the rest of the first round.
This year I'm putting a different twist on my mock. I give my predictions yet also chime in with what I would do if I were the Bill Polian and Ozzie Newsome's of the world. What I think will happen and what I think SHOULD happen are two completely different stories.
11. Buffalo LB Brian Cushing if Raji is off the board otherwise you take the BC defender to pair with Marcus Stroud. They need an offensive tackle in the worst way but they won't want to reach for a bottom-round talent this high up. Thus, they go defense and they need front seven help more than secondary held. Would also look at Everette Brown, Tyson Jackson and CB/FS Michael Jenkins here.
Who I'd take? Either Cushing or Jackson. I love what Cushing brings to the table and Jackson has been rising steadily over the past week.
12. Denver DE Tyson Jackson. They desperately need help on the defensive side of the ball.
Who I'd take Jackson, Raji if here or Everette Brown. Love Cushing too. Safe picks with all four.
13. Washington If they haven't traded for Sanchez ... WR Darrius Heyward-Bey. This one is a wild card. They can go TE Brandon Pettigrew, a speedy wideout or a pass rusher like Brian Orakpo or Everette Brown.
Who I'd take? Pettigrew. He's a legitimate Pro Bowl-potential tight end who could team with Chris Cooley to bring Jason Campbell's game up a notch. I'd go wideout later if I was Washington.
14. Saints RB Knowshon Moreno. They need an every-down back to complement Reggie Bush. Could also go for help in secondary in either Vontae Davis or Malcolm Jenkins.
Who I'd take? For what they need to do I'd probably rather go Beanie Wells because of his size and for the fact they need a guy who could bang it up the gut more. He's better suited for that than Moreno.
15. Houston Beanie Wells. Could go for Moreno if he's there too.
Who I'd take. Wells or Moreno. They need to give Matt Schaub some help.
16. Chargers Everette Brown. I don't think RB is as big a concern as the rest of the world apparently does.
Who I'd take? Same.
17. Jets QB Josh Freeman. If they hadn't already traded up for Mark Sanchez. Jets love this kid's size and football smarts.
Who I'd take? Freeman. They sent him a thick stack of plays the day before they worked him out. By the time they arrived he had it all memorized and down pat. He blew them out of the water. He's not as polished as Sanchez but he can get beaten down and still fight through it. Had nothing to work with in college yet still excelled at times.
18. Denver Texas LB/DE Brian Orapko. They would be wise to use both first-rounders on defense.
Who I'd take? DT Perria Jerry or I'd choose to send a package to move up for Sanchez.
19. Buccaneers CB Malcolm Jenkins. They like Freeman and a few DTs as well. Could also see them liking Vontae Davis here.
Who I'd take? If they can't get Freeman I'd go with Davis, who has more potential at corner than Jenkins, who will eventually move to free safety.
20. Detroit Either LB James Laurinitis or LB Clay Matthews. Gotta go defense here.
Who I'd take? In the end I'd take Laurinitis. Even though many teams have him rated at the end of the first or top of the second, I love his leadership, football smarts and intensity. Plus, he's already a Big 10-area kid. Matthews is more versatile, but that's why they traded for Julian Peterson.
21. Philadelphia TE Brandon Pettigrew. They were in the Tony Gonzalez race but find their guy in the draft's clear-cut top TE prospect.
Who I'd take? Same, no brainer.
22. Vikings Maryland WR Percy Harvin. He scares the heck out of defenses on the field but does he scare prospective employers more off the field? This kid has talent but also major attitude and off-field concerns, including a hole in a bone in his foot.
Who I'd take? Personally, I love Ohio State WR Brian Robiskie. He's the son of a WR coach, has a terrific work ethic and is a big target. At the Senior Bowl while others were playing video games in their rooms, Robiskie was watching film! May be a reach but I'd take a guy who can produce for 10-12 years at a high level at this point regardless of projections. Would also consider wideouts Hakeem Nicks or Kenny Britt.
23. Patriots LB Clay Matthews Jr. Can rush the passer and has versatility. Or, they can do what they love to do and dump out of the slot for more draft picks.
Who I'd take? I'd dump way back down and then pick up secondary help.
24. Falcons CB Alphonso Smith. They got their tight end so now you go offensive line or pretty much anywhere on defense. Could look at a guy like Darius Butler or a DT like Peria Jerry or tackle like Eben Britton.
Who I'd take? Best available defensive player on the board.
25. Miami LB Ray Maualuga. Firecracker of a player who needs to learn on the pro level to stay on his feet more. No doubt he makes things happen in big moments though.
Who I'd take? UNC's Nicks.
26. Ravens OT Eben Britton. They have a big, strong quarterback ... now let's keep him on his feet for a while.
Who I'd take? Same.
27. Indianapolis Peria Jerry. Perfect guy for what their defense does.
Who I'd take? Same.
28. Bills OT Philip Loadholdt. Some may look at this as a reach. If not for a lousy Senior Bowl where he was moved from left to right, this would have seemed sound. He is a monster at 6-8, 340ish who fills a need with the departure of Jason Peters.
Who I'd take? Either Loadholdt or a defensive player such as DE Robert Ayers. They have a lot invested in the DE position dollars-wise but they can use an upgrade at the position for the long-term.
29. Giants WR Hakeem Nicks. They will still dabble and consider Braylon Edwards and if a guy like Heyward-Bey drops they may try to move up to grab him, or someone of his caliber.
Who I'd take? I'd still trade for Anquan Boldin but what do I know? I would not do the trade for Edwards until I figured out why he's suffering from a case of the drops.
30. Titans DT Evander Hood. Reloading the defensive line is a good idea when that line is your team's bread and butter.
Who I'd take? Best value left on the board at this point.
31. Cardinals RB Donald Brown. Loooove this kid's potential. Could turn out to be the most productive back of this class. Hasn't played against the same talent as Moreno or Wells but he's a stud.
Who I'd take? I'm in full support here.
32. Steelers C Alex Mack. Offensive line help here is a need and Mack is a great value this far down. Max Unger could also be an option.
Who I'd take? Best available offensive lineman on the board.
